Mei Fong – Southbank Centre

18th September, 2017

China’s controversial one-child policy has been phased out after over 35 years, and replaced by a two-child per family policy. So how is the new policy affecting women’s lives?

We investigate whether this new policy puts pressure on women to have more children, and if it will result in a gender balance as the Chinese population grows, with society favouring boys less.

Speakers include Mei Fong, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of One Child: The Story of China’s Most Radical Experiment; Kailing Xie, PhD researcher at Centre for Women’s Studies of the University of York; and Liu Ye, lecturer in International Development, King’s College London. With an update from WOW – Women of the World Beijing.
