31st July, 2023
Rock the Boat had two authors at Hay Festival 2023, Anna Woltz and Antony McGowan, which every year brings readers and writers together to share stories and ideas in sustainable events around the world.
Anna Woltz author of My Especially Weird Week with Tess was in conversation with translator David Colmer. They discussed the funny and heartwarming novel which follows 12-year-old Tess and her friend Sam on a mission to find Tess’ missing dad. Amidst the comedic moments there were some interesting reflections on dying, death and bereavement as well as revealing insights about the true meaning of family and friendship.
Another of Rock the Boat’s authors, Anthony McGowan, took part in Hay Festival’s free Programme for Schools for their spring edition. The programme brings writers and young readers together in-person and online for a series of inspiring interactive activities and conversations.
Last year’s Programme for Schools at Hay Festival 2022 saw more than 14,000 attendees from primary and secondary schools across England and Wales, while digital events over the past three years have reached more than 160,000 pupils with free events online.
Julie Finch, Hay Festival CEO, said: “Our Programme for Schools is an annual highlight and we cannot wait to welcome thousands of young people, in-person and online, to join us for these days of inspiration and hope, creating a space where imaginations are free to roam.”
The Carnegie Medal winner discussed why he writes children’s books and the research it entails, the theme of animals and his latest book Dogs of The Deadlands set following the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986.
